Castles and gardens
Discover Stormarn's royal side. Fairytale castles nestled into the landscape take you by surprise when they come into sight. The most famous one is the brilliantly white Castle Ahrensburg with its four towers. But Castle Reinbek, the only castle which, from a historical point of view, is actually a palace, is well worth a visit not to be missed. Stormarn's gardens and parks also tell stories of aristocratic times. From Baroque garden to Chinese garden, from romantic to structured - in Stormarn you will find garden art in various designs.
Castle Reinbek
Castle Reinbek, built between 1572 to 1576 in Dutch Renaissance style under Adolf I, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp, served the Duke as a second residence and hunting lodge. Later, it was the seat of the Royal Danish Officials and the Prussian District Administrator for more than two centuries. Since 1972 it has been in the ownership of the District of Stormarn and the City of Reinbek. It was extensively restored and has since served as a Centre for Culture and Communication in Reinbek. The castle hosts regular events and art exhibitions. The beautiful rooms can also be rented for special events such as weddings and meetings. The castle with its impressive ceiling frescos can also be viewed. An audio guide, spoken by actor Bjarne Mädel, talks and walks you through the castle’s interesting history. However, the house is not considered a museum in a classical sense.
